Community service program on physical activity for dementia prevention among the elderly at Wisma Lansia in Bandung
Abstract
The rising number of elderly individuals has led to a significant increase in age-related conditions, particularly dementia. In Indonesia, the prevalence of dementia continues to grow in line with the aging population, creating major social and healthcare challenges. Dementia, especially Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), causes progressive cognitive decline that interferes with daily activities. Since no definitive cure exists, prevention strategies are essential. Research indicates that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of AD and slow cognitive deterioration by enhancing cerebral blood flow and overall well-being. This community service program was conducted at a nursing home, with 22 elderly residents and 10 staff members participating. The initiative aimed to raise awareness, knowledge, and motivation about the role of physical activity in preventing dementia. Activities included health education sessions, group discussions, Mini-Cog memory assessments, and guided exercise demonstrations. Using a persuasive-educative approach, participants were encouraged to adopt daily physical exercise routines suited to their abilities. The results showed increased understanding and among the elderly and staff, emphasizing that physical activity is a practical, low-cost, and effective approach to maintaining cognitive health and preventing dementia in older adults.
