The Influence of Teacher Competence and Students’ Prior Knowledge on Learning Motivation and Its Implications for Students’ Learning Outcomes in Economics

Abstract


This study aims to determine the effect of teacher’s competence level and student’s prior knowledge level to the student’s learning motivation level and implications to student’s economics learning outcomes. This research was conducted because of the low student’s learning outcomes in subjects Economics in SMA Negeri Bandung City. The hypothesis of this study, namely, teacher’s competence, student’s prior knowledge, and learning motivation are the determinants of learning outcomes which have a positive influence. This study uses survey method with the study population is class of XI IPS SMA Negeri Bandung City, amounting to 3,907 students in 27 schools. While the sample in this study were taken as many as 363 students from 4 schools representing each cluster of SMA Negeri in Bandung City. Data were analyzed using path analysis. The results showed that: teacher’s competence in Economics at SMA Negeri Bandung City included in the high category, as well as student’s prior knowledge, learning motivation, and learning outcomes of economic class XI IPS in SMA Negeri Bandung City included in the high category. The results also showed that the teacher’s competence can affect learning motivation, but the student’s prior knowledge does not affect learning motivation. Moreover, the teacher’s competence direct effect on learning outcomes, but the teacher’s competence do not have an indirect effect on learning outcomes through learning motivation. Similarly, student’s prior knowledge direct effect on learning outcomes, but student’s prior knowledge do not have an indirect effect on learning outcomes through learning motivation. The results also show learning motivation has no effect on learning outcomes.
