Contextual Architecture in Heritage Areas: The Case of Tanatap Heritage Braga

Abstract

 Contextual architecture is often heavily focused on the adaptation of physical building elements, whereas non-physical aspects such as collective memory, spatial atmosphere, and social interaction play an equally vital role, particularly in design interventions within historical districts. This study aims to analyze the application of non-physical contextual architecture at Tanatap Coffee in the Braga area, Bandung. The research employs a mixed-method approach implemented through three main stages: first, data collection and filtering from social media to map initial public perception; second, the distribution of questionnaires to visitors to measure the spatial experience; and third, field validation through direct observation of user activities. The results indicate that Tanatap Coffee successfully creates a sense of place that resonates with Braga's historical narrative through atmospheric manipulation and social circulation, despite its contrasting physical form. In conclusion, the integration of non-physical contextualism in commercial buildings within heritage areas is crucial in maintaining the continuity of the district's character while accommodating contemporary lifestyle functions.
