Abstract

Bedtime procrastination, the tendency to delay sleep despite the knowledge of its negative consequences, is a prevalent issue among adolescents that can lead to a range of emotional, social, and health-related problems. This behaviour often results in chronic sleep deprivation, which impairs cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and decision-making, while also contributing to mood disturbances like anxiety and depression. Socially, adolescents who procrastinate on sleep may struggle with interpersonal relationships, experience social withdrawal, and exhibit poor social reasoning and problem-solving skills. Physically, sleep deprivation increases the risk of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and weakened immune function. To address these issues, adolescents can adopt strategies such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, practicing relaxation techniques, and reducing screen time before bed. Schools and parents also have a crucial role to play by promoting sleep education and modeling healthy sleep behaviours. Overall, understanding the consequences of bedtime procrastination and implementing interventions to improve sleep hygiene is vital for enhancing adolescents' mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
