A case study of learning perspective about baseball-type physical education classes among Japanese university students aspiring to become health and physical education teachers
Abstract
This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of learning perspectives on baseball-type physical education classes among students enrolled in a health and physical education teacher training program by comparing them with perspectives on general physical education classes. Paired t-tests were conducted to examine differences between the two types of classes. The results indicated that students perceived baseball-type physical education classes as contributing less to the improvement of physical abilities than general physical education classes. This perception may stem from the structural characteristics of baseball-type lessons, which often include limited opportunities for continuous physical activity and direct participation in play. It is possible that such perceptions were formed through the participants’ own prior experiences in school physical education. In addition, although the development of communication skills is regarded as a key learning objective in baseball-type physical education, no significant difference was found between the two class types in this regard. This finding suggests that students may not yet fully recognize the distinctive characteristics and educational value of baseball-type physical education. Overall, the results highlight the importance of teacher training programs in fostering a multifaceted understanding of the learning outcomes and educational significance of baseball-type physical education instruction.
