IDENTIFIKASI DAN KLASIFIKASI CARCHAROCLES MEGALODON : HIU PURBA RAKSASA YANG HIDUP DI ZAMAN MIOSEN
Abstract
Carcharocles megalodon is the largest shark species that has ever lived in the world. Based on the morphology and distribution of its teeth, Megalodon was an apex predator with a total body length of 18 meters. Megalodon is a cosmopolitan species with a worldwide distribution of fossils that lived about 2.3 to 2.6 million years ago during the Early Miocene to Late Pliocene. However, the classification of C. megalodon has a lot of interpretation debate. The main objective of this research is to identify Carcharocles megalodon to study the physiological, morphological, and ecological relationship to the environment and to determine the classification of Carcharocles megalodon which has the highest accuracy. The nature of this research is qualitative and quantitative, which is a research approach that produces descriptive data in the form of written or image data, and looks for similarities based on the formulas of experts and the behavior of the object under study accompanied by literature study methods obtained by reading, reviewing and analyzing journals. The results obtained are more specific body sizes of Carcharocles megalodon in the range of 2.20 to 17.90 m with an average body size of 10.02 m in the entire era. Biologically similar to the great white shark (Carcharodon Carcharias). The most accurate classification for C. megalodon is from the order Lamniformes with the genus Carcharocles and the family Otodindae.
