Identification of Protozoa in termites’ (Macrotermes Gilvus Hagen) intestine

Abstract

Insects’ ability in digesting cellulose is a matter worth investigating due to its rareness and process’s complexity; only a handful of insects’ species could digest cellulose and it can happen with or without symbiont. In this article, we examine symbiont protozoan in one of the arguably most prolific wood eater: termites Macrotermes gilvus Hagen. We found three protozoans in termites’ gut, all belonging to flagellate class. We found no symbiont in foregut and midgut and only found the symbionts in hindgut.
