Simbol dan Makna Tari Kélangan

Abstract


This study aims to describe and analyze Tari Kélangan as a Jaipongan dance work created in the era of globalization, which places it within the category of urban culture. The focus of the research includes the creative ideas behind the dance, as well as the symbols and meanings reflected through its movements, makeup, and costumes. This study employs a qualitative paradigm with an ethnocoreological approach, through which the researcher presents findings and discussions on the creative concept, and the symbolic and philosophical meanings of selected movements, makeup, and costume elements. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The research findings reveal that Tari Kélangan was created in 2012 by Endang Caturwati as an interpretation of the song “Kélangan” composed by Yus Wiradireja and Jaja DM. The dance consists of 25 pure movements, 16 meaningful movements, and 16 locomotor movements, categorized according to ethnocoreological theory. Movement development in this dance also draws from pencak silat Nampon techniques, particularly jurus tilu bedol, wijayakusumah, opat liwat, and opat colok. Based on the analysis, the dance symbolizes the harmony of life and conveys the message that one must remain vigilant in preserving their identity. The results of this study may serve as inspiration for stages of dance creation, provide performers with deeper emotional understanding of the dance’s content, and support the community and government initiatives in preserving traditional dance works.
