Analisis Semiotik Roland Barthes terhadap Tanda Verbal dan Tanda Visual pada Isu Sosial Rasisme di Episode 5 Serial “Squid Game”

Abstract

This study employs Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis to examine how verbal and visual signs depict social disparity through the theme of racism in Episode 5 of "Squid Game." The focus is on how dialogue, narration, scene arrangement, character expressions, and visual symbols are used to convey and deepen the understanding of racism within the story. Verbal sign analysis highlights how words, dialogues, and language depict the dynamics among characters from different racial backgrounds. Visual sign analysis examines how scene arrangement, facial expressions, body language, and other visual elements reveal tension, injustice, and social disparity. The findings show that the use of verbal and visual signs in Episode 5 successfully creates a complex representation of racism. Semiotic analysis helps understand how the series' visual and verbal narratives not only tell a story but also convey deeper messages about social disparity and racism. "Squid Game" thus influences viewers' perceptions and understanding of racism and the perpetuation of stereotypes in society.
