Abstract

This article presents a conceptual-critical review of Michele Dillon’s The Sociology of Religion in Late Modernity, focusing on the chapter “Religion as a Field of Sociological Knowledge.” The article aims to examine how Dillon reconstructs the position of religion within contemporary sociological theory by challenging the classical secularization paradigm that predicts the decline of religion in modern societies. Employing a critical literature review and a reflective sociological approach, this study conceptualizes religion as an empirical social fact and a moral resource in late modernity. The analysis demonstrates that Dillon advances a post-secular sociology of religion that emphasizes the coexistence of instrumental rationality, ritual practices, and religious moralities. This article argues that Dillon’s framework is particularly relevant for extending sociological analyses of religion beyond Western contexts, including Indonesia, in addressing religious transformation amid pluralism, globalization, and contemporary social change.

The Sociology of Religion in Late Modernity, khususnya bagian “Religion as a Field of Sociological Knowledge”.
