Abstract

This study aims to analyze the predictive performance of the 2025 Tryout Examination items for the Teacher Professional Education Competency Test (UKPPPG) in the field of History, developed by the Professional Teacher Education (PPG) Study Program team at Universitas Negeri Malang. The research is driven by the need to ensure the quality of evaluation instruments used to assess the readiness of Teacher Professional Education for Specific Teachers (PPG-BGT) participants and to determine whether the tryout items can serve as accurate predictors of success in the official competency test. Using a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, the study began with a quantitative analysis to assess item quality, followed by a qualitative phase to explore participants’ perceptions of the usefulness of the tryout in preparing for the UKPPPG. Quantitative data were collected from the test results of 45 PPG-BGT history participants and analyzed based on item validity, reliability, difficulty index, and discrimination index. Qualitative data were obtained through interviews with three purposively selected participants and analyzed thematically. The integrated findings show that although several items demonstrated weaknesses in validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discrimination power, the tryout was perceived as beneficial in familiarizing participants with the structure, content, and cognitive demands of the UKPPPG, thereby supporting better preparation and potential success in the competency test. This study is one of the first to evaluate UKPPPG tryout items using a psychometric approach combined with participant perception analysis, providing a comprehensive model for test instrument refinement in teacher competency assessments. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of assessment quality standards within professional teacher education. Practically, it offers recommendations for improving test item construction, enhancing predictive accuracy, and strengthening PPG preparation systems.
