Abstract

The existence of a shopping center has an important role in the growth of an area. Based on economic data and trade facilities in Wonogiri Regency, building a convenience store in this area involves one of the fundamental things, including the Wonogiri Regency Government’s plan to collaborate with investors to build a hotel and shopping center at the former Giri Adipura Wonogiri Terminal. This study aims to design a department store in Wonogiri, Central Java, using a Humanistic architectural approach. Data collected through field surveys and literature studies include characteristics of the surrounding environment, topography, climate, vegetation, and social & local culture. After the data were obtained, data analysis was carried out, which was then used as a design solution for the convenience store. This department store refers to the Humanist architectural approach, by taking theories from several experts combined into one with several principles. The first principle is a physiological need, namely by distinguishing between visitor service circulation, management, and service circulation. The second one is safety needs, namely designing mass compositions that can respond to the environment and activities by minimizing the use of openings to make visitors focus on the product, providing private rooms for certain activities, and separating public, private, and service space zones. The third one is love and belonging needs, namely designing a public area like a food court as a place to create a communal setting open to all groups and visitors to enjoy the surrounding environment. The fourth one is a human need, namely providing a place to accommodate trading activities by designing a department store to meet the needs of the community. The fifth one is society, namely creating a building appearance that is attractive and different from the surrounding buildings to show distinctive characteristics and make it an attraction for visitors. It is hoped that the department store designed using the Humanistic architectural approach can meet the needs and provide a safe and comfortable place for its users.
