CULTURAL SPATIAL ZONING MODEL FOR NEO-VERNACULAR RESORT DESIGN IN NORTH SUMBAWA

Abstract


This study proposes a Cultural Spatial Zoning model as a conceptual framework for neo‑vernacular resort design in North Sumbawa, Indonesia. The research addresses the lack of integration between cultural spatial structures and functional zoning in contemporary resort planning. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes the spatial hierarchy of Sumbawa vernacular architecture, local cultural values, and zoning principles commonly applied in tourism resort development. Data was obtained through an extensive literature review and interpreted through architectural and cultural analysis. The findings indicate that traditional Sumbawa spatial organization, comprising public, semi‑public, private, and sacred spaces, reflects patterns of social interaction, privacy structures, and cultural symbolic meanings. This spatial structure can be transformed into a zoning system for resort design that integrates cultural values with the functional needs of modern tourism. The resulting Cultural Spatial Zoning model organizes the resort area in layers, ranging from public, semi-public, and private zones to spiritual zones supported by service zones. Theoretically, this study enriches the study of vernacular architecture and spatial production by demonstrating that cultural spatial structures can serve as a conceptual foundation.
