Abstract

The background of this research is the low ability to understand the mathematical concepts of fourth grade students in elementary school. In previous learning students only focused on receiving information provided by the teacher and less involving students to discover their own mathematical concepts. The purpose of this research was to describe the implementation of learning and increase understanding of students' mathematical concepts in data processing material by applying the Realistic Mathemathics Education (RME) approach. The research method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a research model adapted from Kemmis & Taggart model. The research was carried out by applying the three principles of the RME approach, that is 1) didactical phenomenology, 2) self developed models, 3) guided reinvention. From the results of the study it was obtained an increase in the understanding of students' mathematics concepts in the first cycle of 61% with an average value of 67.70 and increased in the second cycle by 86% with an average value of 79.23. So that it can be concluded that the application of the RME approach can improve understanding of mathematical concepts of students.
