Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of fifth grade elementary school students in understanding reading texts. This is caused by the low reading interest of students as well as monotonous learning strategies which are less uplifting to read students. These problems become very important to be solved considering the thematic learning to understand a reading text is the key to being able to master every content of the lesson. To overcome these problems researchers provide a solution by implementing the PQ4R learning strategy in the learning process. This study aims to improve reading skills of students in grade V elementary school through the PQ4R learning strategy. The research method used was classroom action research with Kemmis and MC Taggart models conducted in 2 cycles. The participants of this study were grade V students in one of the state elementary schools in the Karanganyar subdistrict of Bandung totaling 33 students. Data was collected using an observation sheet and also a worksheet. The results showed that the average value of students' reading comprehension skills increased from 66.6 in the first cycle to 82.9 in the second cycle. Likewise with students' mastery learning, in the first cycle 45.50% increased significantly to 90.90% in the second cycle. The data above shows that the application of the PQ4R learning strategy is effective for improving reading skills of students in grade V in elementary school.
