This research is motivated by the low understanding of the IPS concept of fifth grade Public Elementary Schools students in Sukajadi District, Bandung City. The low level of understanding of the IPS concept is marked by students who still feel the difficulties in re-explaining the materials that have been studied. The purpose of this research is to improve the students’ understanding of the IPS concept by applying STAD cooperative learning type. The research method that is used is Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) proposed by Kemmis and MC Taggart. This research is conducted in two cycles, and the subject of this research is fifth grade students. For the results of the average value of understanding the concept in cycle I is 70 and increased in cycle II to be 88. The students’ understanding of the IPS concept per indicator in the first and second cycles has increased, which are; a) the indicator in explaining in cycle I is 64% and in cycle II to be 91%, b) the indicator in interpreting in cycle I is 62% and in cycle II to be 89%, c) the indicator in giving example in cycle I is 71% and in cycle II it to be 86%, d) the indicator in summarizing in cycle I is 82% and in cycle II it to be 86%
