Abstract


This study responds to Indonesian students’ low science literacy performance in PISA by strengthening science learning in elementary schools through teaching materials that emphasize scientific processes. It aims to develop digital teaching materials based on a scientific approach for the topic of heat transfer to improve fifth-grade students’ science literacy. The study employs a Design and Development (D&D) method using the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. Participants include fifth-grade students and three experts in subject matter, media, and language. Data are collected through literature review, interviews, worklogs, expert validation, and pre- and post-tests of science literacy. The findings show that: (1) digital teaching materials were successfully developed in line with six learning objectives derived from science literacy competency indicators; (2) expert validation yielded high feasibility scores with only minor revisions in language and visual presentation; and (3) limited implementation demonstrated a significant increase in students’ science literacy based on Paired T-test results. Overall, the study concludes that digital teaching materials based on a scientific approach are effective in enhancing students’ engagement in scientific inquiry and strengthening their conceptual understanding of heat transfer, and recommends wider implementation and further testing in diverse school contexts
