Integration of Cultural Elements in Video Mapping Visualization in Indonesia
Abstract
Indonesia possesses a rich and diverse cultural heritage, including mythological narratives, historical struggles, and traditional ornamental patterns. This study aims to examine how deconstruction and deformation of traditional cultural symbols are carried out in the medium of video mapping, what symbolic visual elements are selected to represent local culture, and how these elements are constructed into cultural meaning in live performances. A qualitative case study method was applied to three video mapping performances in Indonesia: Swadharma Ning Pertiwi at GWK Bali, the Fatahillah Museum video mapping in Jakarta, and the Gedung Sate and Villa Isola video mapping in West Java. Findings indicate that cultural integration in video mapping operates through three main principles: (1) context-sensitive deconstruction of cultural narratives, (2) deformation of cultural symbols through lateral thinking, and (3) construction of new meanings arising from the interaction of building facades, technology, and cultural literacy. Stuart Hall's constructionist approach dominates all examined performances, where cultural meaning is built through a dynamic visual sign system rather than merely reflecting existing reality.
