An interpersonal analysis of an English as a foreign language student’s recount text

Abstract

This study unravels an analysis of a recount text created by a junior high school student in Indonesia rooted in its interpersonal metafunction of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), primarily Mood System and Modality, and the pedagogical implication entrenched in the interpretation of the analysis. Given the analysis, this study applies a case study, especially text analysis. The scrutinized text is a recount produced by a female public junior high school student in Majalengka Regency, Indonesia. The analysis results show that the student successfully wrote a recount text ascertained from the text’s schematic structure, social function, and language features. The student maintained her relationship with the readers through the consistent use of Declarative Mood (29 occurrences) throughout the text, regarding the readers as information receivers on an equal level with her, in addition to Imperative Mood (6 occurrences). Despite her success, she showcased a disproportionate use of tenses and Imperatives, entailing her confusion and predicament in utilizing those. Her text reflected the role of her teacher as a guide in producing a recount text. Therefore, gaining more insight into tenses and recounts is recommended.
