ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF UNESCO ASSOCIATED SCHOOLS PROJECT NETWORK IN JAPAN

Abstract


Environmental education for sustainable development in Japan has developed rapidly in recent years. Focusing on formal education, schools called “UNESCO School” play a leading role in environmental education for sustainable development. The school network approved by UNESCO was for promoting international understanding education, but it is currently
positioned as an association of schools promoting ESD. This paper describes the establishment and development of the UNESCO School and focuses on the practices of the schools which focuses on environmental education as ESD.
