GENDER REPRESENTATION IN ASCHENPUTTEL AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CHILDREN’S LITERATURE

Abstract


This study aims to analyze gender representation in the Grimm fairy tale Aschenputtel and to explore its implications for children’s literature. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using a feminist literary criticism approach to examine how gender roles and power relations are constructed within the narrative. The data consist of words, phrases, and narrative elements from the text of Aschenputtel, which are analyzed through close reading and thematic analysis focusing on issues such as passivity, dominance, and gender stereotypes.

The findings reveal that the story consistently portrays the female protagonist as passive, obedient, and dependent on external forces, while the male character is depicted as active, authoritative, and decisive. These representations reflect traditional patriarchal values and reinforce conventional gender roles. Furthermore, the study shows that such representations may influence children’s understanding of gender, particularly through the internalization of stereotypes related to femininity and masculinity. However, the study also highlights that Aschenputtel can serve as a valuable pedagogical tool when approached critically, enabling educators to promote gender awareness and critical thinking through literary learning.
