Peer Review Process

The Journal operates a peer review process and promotes blind reviewing. The acceptance or rejection of articles will be decided by the editorial boards based on the review results supplied by the reviewers. There are no communications between authors and editors concerning the rejection decision. Authors whose papers are rejected will be informed of the reasons for the rejection.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published every April and October. Each issue consists of 9 articles.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...

Fees

Due to the rising costs of academic publications, starting 2022, publication fees shall be implemented to all accepted papers (submission paper is free). This journal charges the following author fees (Article Publication Fee):
- Indonesian authors: 750.000 IDR per article
- International authors: 0 USD per article

Authors can apply waiver. But, it needs verification and it should be applied before submission (not after acceptance).

Plagiarism Policy

Papers submitted to the Jurnal Geogarfi GEA must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. GEA strictly prohibits any forms of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism, text recycling, and redundant publication.

All submitted manuscripts are subjected to a rigorous screening for plagiarism before entering the peer-review process. The journal utilizes Turnitin to verify the originality of the text.

• Maximum Similarity Index: The overall similarity score must not exceed 20%.
• Single Source Match: The similarity from a single publication source must be less than 3%.
• Action on Violation: If a manuscript exceeds the tolerated similarity threshold or indicates clear plagiarism, it will be immediately rejected, and the authors will be notified. In severe cases of academic dishonesty, the journal reserves the right to notify the authors' home institutions.

Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

The publication of an article in the peer-reviewed journals published by the Geography Department, Indonesia University of Education is a process of permanent knowledge improvement. It is a direct reflection of the quality of the work of the authors and the institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method. It is therefore important to agree upon standards of expected ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the act of publishing: the author, the journal editor, the peer reviewer, the publisher and the society of society-owned or sponsored journals.

The Geography Department, Indonesia University of Education takes their duties of guardianship over all stages of publishing extremely seriously and we recognise our ethical and other responsibilities.

We are committed to ensuring that advertising, reprint or other commercial revenue has no impact or influence on editorial decisions. In addition, Editorial Board will assist in communications with other journals and/or publishers where this is useful to editors.

Duties of Authors

Reporting Standards

Authors of reports of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable. Review and professional publication articles should also be accurate and objective, and editorial ‘opinion’ works should be clearly identified as such.

Data Access and Retention

Authors may be asked to provide the raw data in connection with a paper for editorial review, and should in any event be prepared to retain such data for a reasonable time after publication.

Originality and Plagiarism

The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others, that this has been appropriately cited or quoted. Plagiarism takes many forms, from ‘passing off’ another’s paper as the author’s own paper, to copying or paraphrasing substantial parts of another’s paper (without attribution), to claiming results from research conducted by others. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent Publication

An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable. In general, an author should not submit for consideration in another journal a previously published paper.

Acknowledgement of Sources

Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work. Information obtained privately, as in conversation, correspondence, or discussion with third parties, must not be used or reported without explicit, written permission from the source. Information obtained in the course of confidential services, such as refereeing manuscripts or grant applications, must not be used without the explicit written permission of the author of the work involved in these services.

Authorship of the Paper

Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Where there are others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project, they should be acknowledged or listed as contributors. The corresponding author should ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.

Hazards and Human or Animal Subjects

If the work involves chemicals, procedures or equipment that have any unusual hazards inherent in their use, the author must clearly identify these in the manuscript. If the work involves the use of animal or human subjects, the author should ensure that the manuscript contains a statement that all procedures were performed in compliance with relevant laws and institutional guidelines and that the appropriate institutional committee(s) has approved them. Authors should include a statement in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained for experimentation with human subjects. The privacy rights of human subjects must always be observed. 

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed. Examples of potential conflicts of interest which should be disclosed include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding. Potential conflicts of interest should be disclosed at the earliest stage possible.

Fundamental Errors in Published Works

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author's obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper. If the editor or the publisher learns from a third party that a published work contains a significant error, it is the obligation of the author to promptly retract or correct the paper or provide evidence to the editor of the correctness of the original paper.

Duties of Editors

Publication Decisions

The editor of a peer-reviewed journal is responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published, often working in conjunction with the relevant society (for society-owned or sponsored journals). The validation of the work in question and its importance to researchers and readers must always drive such decisions. The editor may be guided by the policies of the journal's editorial board and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism. The editor may confer with other editors or reviewers (or society officers) in making this decision.

Fair Play

An editor should evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.

Confidentiality

The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor's own research without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Editors should recuse themselves (i.e. should ask a co-editor, associate editor or other member of the editorial board instead to review and consider) from considering manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or (possibly) institutions connected to the papers. Editors should require all contributors to disclose relevant competing interests and publish corrections if competing interest.

Data, Image Integrity, and Citation Ethics

GEA promotes transparency and responsible scholarly communication. Authors must ensure that the data supporting their findings are clearly described and accessible for verification, and a data availability statement should be included in the manuscript.
All figures and images must accurately represent the original data and be submitted in high resolution, with a minimum quality of 300 dpi. Any image adjustments must be applied uniformly and must not alter or misrepresent the scientific content.
Authors must also follow proper citation practices by acknowledging relevant prior work. All sources of ideas, data, or methods must be appropriately cited, and plagiarism or improper attribution will be treated as a serious violation of publication ethics.

Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

GEA recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools may assist researchers in limited aspects of manuscript preparation; however, their use must adhere to principles of transparency, accountability, and research integrity. AI systems cannot be listed as authors because authorship requires responsibility for the content, approval of the final manuscript, and the ability to respond to questions regarding the work. If AI tools are used during the writing process, authors must clearly disclose how the tools were applied. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all content, including any material generated with AI assistance. AI may be used only for supportive purposes, such as improving language or readability, and must not replace the authors' intellectual contribution. The use of AI for data analysis or interpretation of research results is not permitted. In addition, generative AI should not be used to create images or visual materials for publication unless it forms an explicit and transparent part of the research methodology. Any use of AI during the peer review process must also be handled responsibly to protect the confidentiality and integrity of the evaluation process. Also, editors and reviewers are prohibited from using AI tools in ways that compromise manuscript confidentiality or intellectual property, including uploading unpublished manuscripts to AI systems that store or reuse content.

Copyright, Licensing, and Access

Authors publishing in Jurnal Geografi GEA retains copyright of their work. All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license, which permits sharing and adaptation with appropriate attribution and under the same licensing terms.

Allegations of Misconduct and Corrective Actions

All allegations of publication misconduct in GEA, including plagiarism, data fabrication or falsification, inappropriate use of artificial intelligence, authorship disputes, and misconduct involving editors or reviewers, are treated with the utmost seriousness and handled in a confidential and fair manner. The journal follows established ethical procedures and the investigation frameworks recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics when addressing such cases.
When concerns are raised, the editorial team conducts a careful assessment that may involve communication with the authors, reviewers, or relevant institutions. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, appropriate editorial actions may be taken, including manuscript rejection, publication of corrections, expressions of concern, or article retractions. In cases of confirmed misconduct, the journal may also notify the authors' affiliated institutions or funding bodies. These measures are intended to protect the integrity of the scholarly record and maintain trust in the academic publication process.

Policy Review and Updates

This statement on publication ethics, misconduct prevention, and AI governance policy is periodically reviewed and updated to remain consistent with evolving international standards, advances in artificial intelligence, and recognized best practices in scholarly publishing. By submitting a manuscript to GEA or participating in its editorial and peer review processes, authors, editors, and reviewers acknowledge and agree to adhere to the principles and policies outlined in this statement.

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

(1) Copyright of the published articles will be transferred to the journal as the publisher of the manuscripts. Therefore, the author confirms that the copyright has been managed by the publisher.

(2) Publisher of Jurnal Geografi Gea is Departemen Pendidikan Geografi, Fakultas Pendidikan Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.

Aims

Jurnal Geografi Gea is the information media academics and researchers who have attention to developing the educational disciplines and disciplines of Geography Education in Indonesia.  Jurnal Geografi Gea is published by Depertemen Pendidikan Geografi, Fakultas Pendidikan Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Provides a way for students, lectures, and other researchers to contribute to the scientific development of Geography Education. GEA received numerous research articles in the field of Geography Education Science and Geography.

Contributions are expected from senior researchers, project managers, research administrators and PhD students at advanced stages of their research, representing both public organizations and private industry. Equally, the journal if intended for scholars and students, reseachers working at research organizations and government agencies, and also for enterprises undertaking applied R&D to lead innovations.

The editorial contents and elements that comprise the journal include:

As far as the criteria for evaluating and accepting submissions is concerned, a rigorous review process will be used. Submitted papers will, prior to the formal review, be screened so as to ensure their suitability and adequacy to the journal. In addition, an initial quality control will be performed, so as to ensure matters such as language, style of references and others, comply with the journal´s style.

Post-Publication Discussion

GEA: Jurnal Geografi GEA welcomes constructive scholarly discussion of its published articles. Post-publication comments help readers, authors, and editors improve the accuracy, clarity, and usefulness of the published record.

1. How to submit a comment
Readers who wish to comment on, ask questions about, or raise concerns regarding a published article may send an email to the editorial at [email protected]. Please include:
• the title of the article, its volume, issue, and DOI or URL;
• your name, affiliation, and contact details;
• a clear, evidence-based description of the comment, question, or concern, with references to the relevant sections, data, or sources.
Comments must be professional, relevant to the article, and free from personal attack.

2. Editorial handling
The editors review each submitted comment within [14] days. A comment that is relevant and constructive is sent to the corresponding author, who is invited to respond within [30] days. Depending on the editors' decision, the comment and the author's response may be published as a "Letter to the Editor" or "Comment and Response" and linked to the original article. Comments that are abusive, off-topic, commercial, or unsupported by evidence will not be published.

3. Concerns about research or publication ethics
Comments that raise concerns about research integrity or publication ethics, such as plagiarism, data fabrication or falsification, authorship disputes, undisclosed conflicts of interest, or inappropriate use of artificial intelligence, are handled under the journal's procedures for allegations of misconduct, following the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) framework. Such concerns are treated confidentially and fairly. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the journal may publish a correction, an expression of concern, or a retraction (see the Correction and Retraction policy).

4. Corrections by authors
If authors discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their published article, they are obliged to notify the journal promptly and cooperate with the editors to issue a correction or retraction when necessary.

5. Editorial decisions
The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision on whether a post-publication comment is published or acted upon. Editors who have a conflict of interest with the article, its authors, or the commenter will not take part in the decision.

If significant errors or inaccuracies are discovered in a published work, authors are obligated to promptly notify the journal and cooperate with editors to issue corrections or retractions when necessary.

Electronic Filing

All manuscripts must be submitted electronically through our online manuscript handling system (Open Journal Systems / OJS).

• Submissions sent via email or postal mail will not be processed.
• Text files must be uploaded in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx). High-resolution figures must be uploaded separately in JPEG, PNG, or TIFF format (minimum 300 DPI).

Policy on the Use of GenAI

GEA recognizes that generative AI (GenAI) tools can support certain stages of manuscript preparation. Their use must follow the principles of transparency, accountability, and research integrity. This policy applies to authors, reviewers, and editors.

1. Authorship and Accountability

• AI tools cannot be listed as authors because they cannot take responsibility for the work, approve the final manuscript, or answer questions about it.
• Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all content, including text, data, figures, and citations that were generated or edited with AI assistance.
• AI must be used under direct human supervision. Authors must critically review and revise all AI output before submission.

2. Transparency and Disclosure

Any use of AI tools in writing the manuscript must be stated in the manuscript itself, and the authors must confirm the role in which the AI was used.

What to disclose:

• The name and version of the tool
• The role of the AI and the purpose for which it was used (for example, language editing or another permitted use listed in Section 3)
• The extent of its contribution to the work, with confirmation that its use was limited to the permitted uses in Section 3

• In the Acknowledgements
• In the Methods section, when AI was used for analysis or coding
• In a separate AI declaration placed before the References

Example: "The authors used [tool name and version] for [role, e.g., language editing] during the preparation of this manuscript. The authors confirm that the AI was used only for the permitted purpose(s) stated here, reviewed and edited the output, and take full responsibility for the content of the publication."

3. Permissible Uses (with Disclosure)
AI may be used for the following supportive purposes, provided the specific role of the AI is stated in the manuscript, and the authors verify the results:

• Language and grammar editing to improve clarity and readability
• Drafting non-critical sections of the manuscript, which authors must then revise
• Brainstorming ideas and outlining
• Data analysis or visualization, only when the results can be verified and reproduced by humans and the methods are described
• Summarizing literature, with checks for accuracy and proper citation

4. Prohibited Uses
The following uses are not allowed:

• Fabricating data, results, or references
• Presenting AI-generated content as original work without attribution
• Using AI for core intellectual tasks, such as formulating hypotheses, designing the study, interpreting findings, or drawing conclusions
• Uploading unpublished manuscripts or review reports to AI tools that store or reuse content (applies to editors and reviewers, to protect confidentiality and intellectual property)
• Using AI to misrepresent methods, results, or conclusions

5. Consequences of Misuse
Violations of this policy may be handled as research misconduct. Possible actions include:

• Rejection of the submission
• Retraction of a published article
• A ban on future submissions to GEA
• Notification of the author's institution and relevant ethics bodies
• This policy will be reviewed and updated periodically as AI technology and publishing standards evolve.

Manuscript Type

GEA: Jurnal Geografi Gea publishes scientific papers on the results of research and reviews of the literature in the sphere of Geography education. All manuscripts must be original, written in high-quality academic English, and prepared according to the journal's Author Guidelines and article template.

A full report of an original empirical study in Geography education, such as quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, classroom action research, or research and development studies. Research articles should address one or more areas within the journal's Focus and Scope:

Conflict of Interest

Editorial Conflicts of Interest and Transparency

To maintain transparency and avoid conflicts of interest, GEA applies strict procedures in handling manuscripts submitted by members of the editorial team. Editors must disclose any personal, professional, or financial interests that could influence editorial judgment and must recuse themselves from handling manuscripts where such conflicts exist. Submissions authored or co-authored by editors, including Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors, or Editorial Board members, are managed independently by other editors and undergo the same rigorous and confidential peer review process as all other submissions. Editors involved as authors have no access to reviewer identities, reports, or editorial decisions related to their manuscripts. Unpublished materials and privileged information obtained through the editorial or peer review process must remain confidential and must not be used for personal research or advantage without the author's explicit consent. Editors also take appropriate actions when ethical concerns arise regarding submitted or published works, including investigating complaints in cooperation with the publisher and, when necessary, issuing corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern in accordance with established publication ethics standards.

Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest and Funding

Authors submitting manuscripts to GEA are required to disclose any financial, professional, or personal relationships that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research process or the interpretation of results. All sources of funding and financial support must be clearly identified in the manuscript. Authors should also transparently describe the role of funding bodies in the design of the study, data collection, analysis, interpretation of findings, and publication decisions. Full disclosure helps ensure transparency and allows readers to assess potential sources of bias. Failure to report relevant conflicts of interest or funding information may be considered a breach of publication ethics and may lead to editorial actions such as manuscript rejection, publication of a correction, or retraction of the article if the issue is identified after publication.
