Assesing Habema Lake and Trikora Peak as Mountain Tourism Destinations in Papua Pegunungan Province
Abstract
This study investigates the potential of Lake Habema and Trikora Peak as emerging mountain tourism destinations in Papua, Indonesia, which are gaining recognition alongside Carstensz Pyramid. However, despite their growing popularity, these regions face challenges due to weak management and limited research on their tourism development. The aim of this research is to provide strategic recommendations for the sustainable development of mountain tourism in the Papua Highlands, focusing on these two areas. Through field surveys, observations, and interviews, this study identifies the unique appeal of Lake Habema and Trikora Peak, characterized by high-quality landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant local cultures. To realize their full tourism potential, the study emphasizes the need for sustainable tourism practices and careful planning. Key factors for successful tourism development include: 1) Environmental Conservation, ensuring eco-friendly infrastructure and responsible tourism to protect fragile ecosystems; 2) Community-Based Tourism, engaging local communities in decision-making and ensuring they benefit from tourism; 3) Long-Term Sustainability, creating a balance between economic development and the preservation of the environment and culture; 4) Collaborative Governance, promoting partnerships between the National Park authority, local government, the private sector, and local communities; and 5) Safe and Supportive Environment, requiring cooperation among various stakeholders to create a conducive and secure environment for tourists. The study concludes that while the region has significant tourism potential, further research and planning are necessary to address current gaps and guide future sustainable tourism development in the area.
