Abstract


Mangrove ecosystems play a crucial role in sustaining coastal ecological stability, particularly in tropical regions like Indonesia. This study aims to analyze and compare the dynamics of mangrove growth across four coastal regencies in Riau Province, Kepulauan Meranti, Pelalawan, Indragiri Hilir, and Rokan Hilir—by assessing variations in vegetative structure and biophysical conditions. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, the research employed systematic plot sampling (10×10 m) and biophysical observation in six selected villages. Parameters such as tree height, diameter at breast height (DBH), density, species composition, natural regeneration, and substrate characteristics were recorded between May and June 2024. The findings reveal significant inter-regional differences in survival rates, with Sonde village achieving the highest (73.34%) due to physical wave protection, while Tanjung Bunga recorded the lowest (27.36%) due to extreme substrate temperature and low humidity. Avicennia alba emerged as the dominant species due to its adaptability to a wide salinity range (15–24‰) and muddy substrates. Locations with moderate pH, lower temperatures, and physical protection demonstrated better vegetative growth and biodiversity. The study highlights the pivotal influence of substrate temperature, salinity, and anthropogenic pressures on mangrove growth. These insights emphasize the need for localized, community-based mangrove management and reinforce the importance of biophysical monitoring to guide effective and sustainable coastal ecosystem conservation
