Evaluation of Facilities and Infrastructure of Bandung Station as a North-South Area Circulation HUB

Adam Juan Kevin Rinaldy

Abstract

The Bandung Railway Station holds a strategic role as the main gateway to the city, representing its urban identity while supporting public mobility. The expansion of its functions—serving long-distance, local, and feeder trains (Whoosh/KCIC)—has led to a significant increase in user numbers, especially during peak periods. This situation has resulted in excessive pressure on facilities and infrastructure, leading to a decline in comfort and accessibility. Additionally, the access system, which is limited to passengers only, restricts interactions with pedestrians and non-passenger visitors, thus hindering integration between the northern and southern areas of the station. This research aims to evaluate the infrastructure performance of Bandung Station as a circulation hub within an integrated area. The methods used include field studies, direct observation, and references to railway regulations. The analysis shows that the existing facilities do not optimally support the station's function as an inclusive public space. Therefore, a redesign of pedestrian pathways and public space arrangements is necessary, ensuring adaptability to the area’s context. These recommendations are expected to enhance connectivity, support the revitalization of the surrounding area, and strengthen the station’s role—as seen in similar case studies—as a center for sustainable urban mobility.
