Abstract

This research is motivated by learning in schools. Learning is given in text book without providing an opportunity for students to develop critical thinking skills, because the teacher uses memorization methods to sharpen students' memory. Students are only able to answer simple questions that match the substance of the material they are memorizing. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of learning fictional children's stories in developing critical thinking skills in grade 3 elementary school students. One of the efforts made to develop critical thinking skills is by applying learning through children's fiction. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method of non equivalent control group design with a sample of research, namely grade 3 students of elementary school located at one of the elementary schools in Coblong Bandung sub-district. This study uses a data collection instrument in the form of a test instrument with a total of 14 questions arranged based on aspects of critical thinking skills. The results of the research conducted showed that the application of children's fiction stories had a contribution of 80.8%. So it can be concluded that children's fiction stories are effective in developing students' critical thinking skills.
