Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of varying the ratio of RON 92 petrol and ethanol blends on engine performance and exhaust emissions in a 12K00 type engine. The research method involved a dynamometer test to measure power, torque and air fuel ratio (AFR) and a gas analyser to analyse exhaust emissions (CO, HC, O2 and CO2). The population of the study was a 12K00 type engine, with the samples being various blend ratios of RON 92 petrol and ethanol: 100:0, 90:10, 85:15, 80:20, and 75:25. The results showed that increasing the ethanol content of the fuel blend significantly reduced CO and HC emissions, with optimal ratios found at 85:15 and 80:20 blends for the best performance and lowest emissions. A reduction in CO2 emissions was seen at higher ethanol ratios, despite an initial increase at low blend ratios. This study concludes that the use of ethanol as a petrol blend has a positive impact on engine performance and reduces exhaust emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly fuel solution.
