Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of an integrated league competition model embedded with life skills education compared to a conventional competition model in enhancing the youth athlete psychosocial development. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, the research involved 48 female basketball athletes aged 12–18 years from East Lombok, Indonesia, randomly assigned to either an integrated or non-integrated competition group. The experimental group received a life skill training during both practices and matches, while the control group participated in the standard league play. The life skill development was measured by using the Life Skill Scale for Sport (LSSS) instrument. Findings indicated that both groups experienced improvements in life skills, but the integrated group showed significantly greater gains, particularly in teamwork, time management, and interpersonal communication. Statistical analysis confirmed the superiority of the integrated model in promoting life skills (p < 0.001). These results support the integration of structured life skills education within competitive sport contexts and offer culturally relevant evidence for sport-for-development frameworks in Indonesia. The study contributes to theoretical discourse and practical applications in youth development through sport, with implications for coaches, policy-makers, and sport organizations aiming to align with Indonesia sport for all movement.
