Kontestasi Wacana Religius dalam Media Populer: Serial Bidaah dalam Bingkai Sosiologi Giddens

Abstract


The contestation of religious discourse in popular media has become a significant issue in contemporary socio-religious studies. The series Bidaah, as a form of popular culture, portrays how religious symbols and teachings can be manipulated by social actors to establish spiritual dominance within new social spaces. This study applies Anthony Giddens' structuration theory to analyze the dynamics of agency and structure in the production, reproduction, and resistance of deviant religious discourse depicted in the series. A descriptive qualitative method is employed, utilizing textual analysis and social media observation as discursive arenas. The findings reveal that Bidaah not only represents deviant teachings as a social phenomenon but also illustrates how society actively engages as agents in deconstructing religious meanings through interactions within popular media. The series becomes a site of interpretive contestation, where religious power relations are challenged through processes of reflection, critique, and collective meaning-making. These findings highlight the strategic role of popular media in fostering critical awareness and religious literacy in society
