Analysis of Speech Acts in the Movie “Theeb” (by Naji Abu Nowar)

Abstract

In the study of linguistics and pragmatics, speech acts are a form of language use that can be conveyed orally or in writing which is not just conveying information, but also as a tool to perform actions in a communication. This means that every utterance or writing has the potential to become a speech act that describes the intent and purpose of the speaker or interlocutor. In a movie, dialog between characters becomes one of the important elements that contain various types of speech acts such as locution, illocution and perlocution. This research aims to know and describe the form of speech acts in the movie Theeb. This research is a descriptive qualitative language research. The data in this research is the speech of the characters in the movie, while the data source is the movie “Theeb” by Naji Abu Nowar. The data collection technique uses the listening method with tapping technique and note-taking technique. The data analysis technique uses the commensurate method with the basic technique of sorting out the determining elements (PUP) and the advanced technique of comparative equating (HBS). The results showed that there were 20 locutionary speech acts, 40 illocutionary speech acts consisting of 25 directive, 10 assertive, 2 commissive, 3 expressive, and 10 perlocutionary speech acts.
