EFL TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS ON ICT USE FOR CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

Although continuing professional development program is imperative, teachers are often constrained by the lack of availability of time and financial support in joining formal face-to-face professional development program. The development of technology, such as Information Communication Technology (ICT), provides solutions to create a new learning environment for teachers to continue their professional development. This study was intended to investigate how EFL teachers perceive ICT for continuing professional development, which domain of competency that the teachers typically develop through the use of ICT and which ICT tools teachers mostly used during continuing their professional development. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design involving 16 EFL teachers from five different schools in West Java. The data were collected by using questionnaires and interviews. The results showed that teachers do use ICT as a media to continue professional development. The study also revealed that teachers mainly use ICT tools to improve their understanding about the subject matter and also pedagogical knowledge of the subject. As a recommendation it is expected that teachers could maintain and regulate their commitment on continuing professional development.
