Green Chemistry Practicum Workshop to Enhance the Understanding and Skills of High School Students and Chemistry Teachers in the Riau Islands in Implementing Green Chemistry Principles in Chemistry Learning [Workshop Praktikum Kimia Hijau untuk Meningkatkan Pemahaman dan Keterampilan Siswa dan Guru Kimia Sekolah Menengah Atas di Kepulauan Riau dalam menerapkan Prinsip Kimia Hijau pada Pembelajaran Kimia]
Abstract
Pembelajaran kimia perlu diarahkan pada pengembangan kesadaran lingkungan melalui penerapan prinsip-prinsip Kimia Hijau. Namun, implementasi Kimia Hijau dalam pembelajaran masih menghadapi berbagai kendala, seperti keterbatasan sarana praktikum dan rendahnya pemahaman guru mengenai prinsip-prinsip kimia hijau. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan guru kimia serta siswa SMA dalam menerapkan prinsip Kimia Hijau melalui workshop praktikum berbasis hands-on activity. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 12 Februari 2026 di Laboratorium Sains Kimia Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji dengan melibatkan 12 guru kimia dan 5 siswa SMA yang tergabung dalam MGMP Kimia Kota Tanjung Pinang. Workshop diawali dengan pemberian angket awal, pemaparan materi mengenai Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) dan Kimia Hijau, serta kegiatan praktikum menggunakan Kit Praktikum Kimia Hijau. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa seluruh peserta guru telah melaksanakan praktikum kimia di sekolah, namun menghadapi berbagai kendala seperti keterbatasan alat, bahan, dan pengelolaan limbah. Meski demikian, di tengah keterbatasan tersebut, sebanyak 50% guru telah mengimplementasikan prinsip Kimia Hijau dalam pembelajaran kimia. Evaluasi dari peserta menunjukkan bahwa kit dan prosedur praktikum yang telah dikembangkan memperoleh respons positif serta dinilai layak digunakan dalam pembelajaran kimia di sekolah menengah. Selain itu, peserta menyatakan memperoleh pengetahuan dan pengalaman baru mengenai penerapan Kimia Hijau serta menunjukkan antusiasme untuk mengimplementasikannya di sekolah. Kegiatan workshop ini terbukti mampu meningkatkan kesadaran, pemahaman, dan motivasi peserta dalam menerapkan prinsip Kimia Hijau untuk mendukung pembelajaran kimia yang berkelanjutan.
Chemistry learning needs to be directed towards developing environmental awareness through the application of Green Chemistry principles. However, the implementation of Green Chemistry in learning still faces various obstacles, such as limited practicum facilities and teachers' low understanding of Green Chemistry principles. This community service activity aims to enhance the understanding and skills of teachers and high school students in applying Green Chemistry principles through a hands-on activity-based practicum workshop. The activity was carried out on February 12, 2026, at the Chemistry Science Laboratory of Raja Ali Haji Maritime University, involving 12 chemistry teachers and 5 high school students who are members of the Chemistry Teacher Forum (MGMP) in Tanjung Pinang. The workshop began with the administration of an initial questionnaire, presentation of material on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Green Chemistry, and practicum activities using the Green Chemistry Practicum Kit. The results showed that all participating teachers have been conducting carried out chemistry practicums at school, despite facing various obstacles, such as limited tools, materials, and waste management. Amid those limitations, 50% of participating teachers had implemented Green Chemistry principles in chemistry learning. Participants' evaluations showed that the developed kits and lab procedures received positive feedback and were deemed suitable to be utilized in the secondary school chemistry laboratory activities. Furthermore, participants reported gaining new knowledge and experience. Towards the application of Green Chemistry and expressed enthusiasm for implementing it in their schools. The workshop demonstrated a significant increase in participants' awareness, understanding, and motivation in applying Green Chemistry principles to support sustainable chemistry learning.
