Small-Scale Chemistry Workshop on Organic Chemistry Experiments for High School Teachers in Greater Bandung [Pelatihan Kimia Skala Kecil pada Eksperimen Kimia Organik bagi Guru SMA se-Bandung Raya]
Abstract
Pelaksanaan praktikum kimia di tingkat sekolah seringkali menemui beberapa kendala, diantaranya keterbatasan alat, bahan, ruang laboratorium, waktu eksperimen, serta kompetensi guru. Eksperimentasi kimia skala kecil menawarkan solusi yang efektif terhadap permasalahan tersebut, sekaligus memberikan manfaat yang luas baik dari segi ekonomi, lingkungan, maupun pedagogis. Walaupun banyak memberikan manfaat, pendekatan kimia skala kecil masih belum banyak diketahui baik oleh guru maupun peserta didik. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan untuk memperkenalkan kimia skala kecil melalui pelatihan eksperimen kimia dengan menggunakan kit kimia organik skala mikro. Sebanyak 24 guru sekolah menengah atas (SMA) se-Bandung Raya mengikuti kegiatan pelatihan yang diselenggarakan di Laboratorium Kimia Organik dan Biokimia, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Pada kegiatan ini, peserta melaksanakan dua eksperimen kimia organik secara berkelompok, yaitu sintesis dibenzalaseton dan tersier butil klorida. Dampak kegiatan pelatihan ini dievaluasi melalui wawancara singkat terhadap peserta. Melalui pelatihan ini, peserta berhasil mensintesis dan melakukan karakterisasi senyawa organik yang ditargetkan, walaupun dalam skala kecil. Kegiatan pelatihan ini mendapatkan tanggapan yang positif karena dapat menambah wawasan peserta dan menghadirkan pengalaman baru dalam melaksanakan eksperimen kimia skala kecil. Pelatihan ini turut memperluas pemahaman peserta mengenai peran kit skala mikro dalam mendukung penerapan kimia hijau.
The implementation of chemistry practicums in schools often encounters several challenges, such as inadequate equipment, materials, laboratory space, experiment time, and teachers’ competence. Small-scale chemistry (SSC) experimentation offers effective solutions to these issues while delivering numerous advantages in economic, environmental, and pedagogical aspects. However, despite these benefits, the SSC approach remains unfamiliar to many teachers and students. To bridge this gap, this community service initiative was carried out to introduce SSC through a workshop on chemistry experiments using a microscale organic kit. Twenty-four high school teachers from Greater Bandung participated in the workshop, which was held at the Organic and Biochemistry Laboratory of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. During the session, participants conducted two group-based organic chemistry experiments: the synthesis of dibenzalacetone and the preparation of tertiary butyl chloride. The workshop’s impact was evaluated through brief interviews with the participants. Through this workshop, participants successfully synthesized and characterized the target organic compounds, even at a reduced scale. This initiative received positive feedback from participants, enhancing their knowledge and providing new experiences in conducting SSC experiments. Additionally, the workshop offered insights into how the microscale kit supports green chemistry practices.
