Abstract

Inference-making is central to reading comprehension, yet literacy instruction in elementary schools remains largely oriented toward locating explicitly stated information. This rapid systematic review mapped the intervention designs used to teach inference in Grades 3–6, examined the degree of alignment among their instructional components, and identified gaps for future research. The review was reported in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 statement and used streamlined, rapid-review procedures: records were identified through Google Scholar and backward citation chasing, and screening and coding were performed by a single reviewer. Of the 36 records assessed for eligibility, seven studies met the core inclusion criteria, and two early-grade studies were examined in a supplementary analysis. Data were coded against a framework comprising six instructional components derived from curriculum development and constructive alignment theory and five inferential thinking indicators derived from the literature on inference in reading, and methodological quality was appraised with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Four patterns emerged. First, international studies targeted specific inference types, whereas Indonesian studies tended to treat inference as one facet of general comprehension. Second, the most consistent evidence, judged to be of moderate certainty, came from explicit inference instruction delivered through inferential questioning, graphic organizers, and explanatory feedback; close reading showed no clear advantage. Third, few studies explicitly designed all six instructional components, with assessment the component most often left implicit. Fourth, digital learning materials remained largely untested for inferential outcomes in the upper elementary grades. Because the search relied on a single search engine and only two of the seven studies were of high quality, these patterns should be regarded as tentative. The available evidence suggests that instructional designs may benefit from combining explicit inference instruction with close alignment among learning objectives, activities, materials, and assessment.
