RELIGIOUS IDENTITIES AND RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS: ANALISIS NARATIF IDENTITAS KEAGAMAAN DALAM PERSPEKTIF SOSIOLOGI AGAMA NANCY T. AMMERMAN

Abstract

This paper reviews Nancy T. Ammerman’s chapter “Religious Identities and Religious Institutions” in The Handbook of the Sociology of Religion (2003). Ammerman conceptualizes religious identity as a dynamic and socially negotiated narrative process rather than a fixed or institutional category. Using a theoretical–analytic approach grounded in narrative sociology, she synthesizes classical and contemporary social theories (Goffman, Berger & Luckmann, Giddens, Bourdieu, Somers) to explain how religion functions as both structure and agency within identity formation. This review critically discusses Ammerman’s framework, emphasizing its relevance for modern plural societies and digital religiosity. It argues that Ammerman’s contribution lies in reframing religion as an embodied narrative practice—lived and reinterpreted through everyday interactions, institutional engagements, and cultural spaces beyond formal religious settings.

Artikel ini mereview tulisan Nancy T. Ammerman berjudul “Religious Identities and Religious Institutions” dalam buku The Handbook of the Sociology of Religion (2003).
