Abstract

This study was conducted to address the gap between vocational high school students’ competencies and the demands of Industry 4.0 and green energy development in Batam City. The study aimed to implement the Employability Skills Learning (ESL) syntax and examine its impact on students’ learning outcomes and work-related skills. A quantitative quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants were 80 vocational high school students from technical and energy-related programs. The ESL syntax was implemented through structured learning stages and integrated into a green energy project involving the design of a simple solar panel system. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, observations, and project documentation. Quantitative analysis using paired-sample tests showed that the mean score increased from 61.2 in the pretest to 82.5 in the posttest, indicating a gain of 21.3 points. The improvement was statistically significant (p < 0.001) with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.15). Observational results indicated increased student participation, problem-solving ability, teamwork, communication, and responsibility during learning activities. These findings demonstrate that the ESL syntax is effective in enhancing vocational students’ competencies and has practical implications for improving vocational learning aligned with industrial needs and green energy development.
