Abstract

In fact, the reality of jazz improvisation is a complex set of knowledge, experience and musical considerations that are realized through instant musical composition in jazz musical activities. Thus, improvisation skills can have implications for needs outside of jazz music activities. This research aims to build a construction regarding jazz improvisation skills obtained through exploring learning experiences, musical considerations and the implications of these skills. This research was conducted with 3 (three) jazz music teachers at Venche Music School (VMS) with data collection methods through observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques include Open Coding, Axial Coding and Selective Coding. The results showed that improvisation skills are obtained by self-taught, the role of informal education and non-formal education is added, musical considerations are influenced by internal factors and external factors of the improviser itself so as to realize the language of jazz music and implied in learning products in the form of jazz learning curriculum and professional careers in music. Then the findings are categorized so that a construction of jazz improvisation skills through transmission between non-formal and informal learning can be transmitted to formal learning.
