UJI KESUKAAN DAN UJI IRITASI FORMULASI LULUR BERBAHAN RUMPUT LAUT (EUCHEUMA COTTONII) DAN GARAM LAUT (SEA SALT)

Abstract


A body scrub is a kind of skincare that is applied by smearing and massaged to exfoliate skin. Seaweed is a natural component that can balance water and has function as a moisturizer, meanwhile, sea salt has a coarse texture and can be used as a natural scrub. The aim of this study is to determine the body scrub formulations made using various ratios of Eucheuma cottonii and sea salt, as well as to test skin irritation. A mixed methods approach was employed, with descriptive qualitative in the skin irritation test and quantitative in the sensory preference (hedonic) test of the scrub formulation in terms of color, scent, texture, and moisture. Kruskal-Wallis and Post hoc tests were used to examine hedonic test scores ranging from 1 (strongly dislike) to 5 (strongly like). The irritation test results showed that applying the formulation E. cottonii and sea salt body scrub in ratio 1:1, 1:2, 2:1 and control did not lead to skin irritation or rashes. The best formulation of body scrub composition has a 1:1 mixture of E. cottonii and sea salt. The hedonic test results for the best body scrub formulation showed color was 4 ± 0.82, aroma was 3.8 ± 0.79, texture was 4.3 ± 0.94, moisture was 4.8 ± 0.42, and overall scoring were 4.5 ± 0.53. The application of body scrub mixture of E. cottonii and sea salt to the skin is able to exfoliate without causing skin irritation.
