Problem-based learning and mind mapping: their impact on students’ conceptual understanding and creativity in history material

Abstract


This research is motivated by the importance of mastering 21st century competencies, especially the conceptual understanding and creativity of elementary school students on historical material which is often considered abstract and difficult. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the problem - based learning model (PBL) with the help of the Mind Mapping strategy in improving students' conceptual understanding and creativity on the material of the Narrative Text of the History of Indonesian Independence. The research method used is a quasi-experimental design with a Non-equivalent Control Group Design . The research subjects consisted of 48 fifth-grade students of Muhammadiyah Bojonggede Elementary School which were divided into an experimental class (VA) and a control class (VB). Data were collected through conceptual understanding test instruments (pretest-posttest), creativity questionnaires, observation sheets, and student response journals. The results showed a significant increase in conceptual understanding in the experimental class with an N-Gain value of 0.56 (medium category), compared to the control class which only obtained 0.25 (low category). The t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 <0.05, which means there was a real difference in effectiveness. Furthermore, the experimental class's creativity competency averaged 85% (high category), surpassing the control class's score (74%). Students' responses to the learning implementation were very positive, with a percentage of 99.5%. It can be concluded that problem-based learning supported by the Mind Mapping strategy is effective in improving students' conceptual understanding and creativity in elementary schools.
