Need analysis of story-based card media for GASING literacy-numeracy learning

Abstract


This study aims to analyze the need for developing story-based card media as an innovative instructional medium at the concrete stage of the GASING (Easy, Fun, and Enjoyable) method in literacy and numeracy learning at the elementary school level. The study employed a qualitative approach within the framework of Design-Based Research (DBR), specifically focusing on the needs analysis stage as the foundation for subsequent media development. Data were collected through classroom observations, structured interviews with two classroom teachers and the school principal, as well as questionnaires distributed to 30 fourth-grade students at SD Negeri Girian Indah, Bitung City. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the concrete learning media currently used in the GASING method are still limited to conventional number cards that emphasize procedural numeracy skills and lack contextual narrative elements. As a result, learning activities have not optimally integrated literacy skills, particularly reading comprehension and contextual understanding. Both teachers and students expressed the need for innovative learning media that combine numeracy concepts with engaging and meaningful stories to improve student motivation, participation, and conceptual understanding. Furthermore, story-based card media are considered capable of creating a more interactive, enjoyable, and student-centered learning environment.
