The Semantic Derivations of the Root Letters' ح م ل' in the Holy Qur'an: A Quranic Study/أوجه الاشتقاق الكبير لأحرف "ح م ل" في القرآن الكريم: دراسة دلالية قرآنية

Abstract

Word derivation is essential in interpreting Quranic verses, particularly with the letters "ḥa ma la," which have multiple meanings through ishtiqaq Kabir (major derivation). These meanings include "ḥamala" (to carry something), "ḥalama" (a dream), "maḥala" (a place), "malaḥa" (salt), "lamaḥa" (a glimpse), and "laḥama" (meat). A semantic study is necessary to understand these meanings in their Quranic context. This research identifies the ishtiqaq Kabir forms of "ḥa ma la" in the Quran, explicitly exploring their meanings and correlations within the text. The study uses inductive and descriptive methods to analyze these derivations through a contextual semantic lens. The research findings, as referenced in the book Al-Ain, highlight five significant derivations. Readers are encouraged to use semantic analysis to comprehend the Quran's language better, thereby avoiding potential misinterpretations and ensuring a more profound understanding of its verses. This approach underscores the importance of context in grasping the Quran's valid message.
