Abstract

Innovative and effective language-teaching strategies in elementary schools are essential to study longitudinally because they are fundamental to students' basic literacy skills. This study aims to examine educators' strategy in improving the productive language skills (speaking and writing) of fifth-grade students at SDN Serang 3, with a focus on the use of the “Small Dictionary” as a learning tool. A descriptive qualitative case study approach was used, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving students and teachers at SDN Serang 3. The results showed that the planning process included setting learning objectives and preparing teaching materials. At the same time, the implementation involved various methods, such as discussions, language games, and the integration of conventional and digital media, including the Online KBBI (Big Indonesian Dictionary). The unique strategy found was the innovative use of the Small Dictionary combined with digital tools, which significantly improved students' vocabulary and communication skills. The challenges faced included the lack of optimized learning facilities and limited language activities outside the classroom, while school policies and available resources provided support. In conclusion, the strategic use of the Small Dictionary and digital integration offers a replicable model for improving productive language skills. In practical terms, this study recommends that schools adopt similar tools and methods and encourage language-based extracurricular activities to improve literacy.
