Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of emotion regulation and self-control on aggressive behavior and social adjustment among upper-grade students (Grades IV and V) at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Ma'had Al-Zaytun. A quantitative approach with an explanatory correlational design was employed. The study involved 53 students selected through proportionate stratified random sampling from a population of 263 students. Data were collected using questionnaires measuring emotion regulation, self-control, aggressive behavior, and social adjustment. The instruments were tested for validity and reliability, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. The findings revealed that emotion regulation had a significant negative effect on aggressive behavior (β = -0.283; p < 0.001) and a significant positive effect on social adjustment (β = 0.343; p < 0.001). Self-control also had a significant negative effect on aggressive behavior (β = -0.639; p < 0.001) and a significant positive effect on social adjustment (β = 1.090; p < 0.001). Simultaneously, emotion regulation and self-control significantly influenced aggressive behavior (R² = 0.729) and social adjustment (R² = 0.721). These findings indicate that strengthening students' emotion regulation and self-control can reduce aggressive behavior while enhancing social adjustment in the boarding school environment. The study contributes to educational psychology and guidance and counseling by providing empirical evidence on the importance of socio-emotional competencies in supporting students' adaptive behavior.
