Abstract

This study aims to analyze the utilization of social media as a digital learning tool for Generation Z students at SMAN 1 Tebing Tinggi Balangan. The research employed a mixed methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. The subjects consisted of 60 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results revealed that WhatsApp was the most dominantly used platform in learning activities with a percentage of 95%, followed by YouTube (90%), TikTok (88%), and Instagram (85%). Social media was found to enhance students’ learning motivation, access to information, and learning interaction. However, the use of social media also created challenges such as learning distractions and limited academic control. The novelty of this study lies in the analysis of a pedagogically integrated multiplatform social media approach within the context of secondary schools in rural areas. This study confirms that the structured integration of social media can support digital learning that aligns with the characteristics of Generation Z students.
