IMPROVING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND LEARNING OUTCOMES IN ENGINE SUBJECTS THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PJBL

Abstract

Teaching in vocational high schools, particularly in technical education programs such as mechanical Engineering, requires strategies that enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes. This study examines how learning outcomes and student activity levels of Class XI TSM 2 students at SMKN 11 Malang were influenced by the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approach. Two cycles of classroom action research, consisting of the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection, involved a total of twenty-five students. Data were collected through documentation, validated learning outcome tests, and observation sheets, and were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that learning mastery increased from 24% to 96%, while student engagement improved from 59% in Cycle I to 71% in Cycle II. These findings indicate that PjBL is effective in improving understanding, engagement, and practical skills.
