The Practice Of Ewuh Pakewuh Values Among University Students

Abstract


This research aims to explore the phenomenon of ewuh pakewuh and its influence on student participation in educational practices at Yogyakarta State University, particularly in the Social Studies Education Program. Ewuh pakewuh, as a Javanese cultural value related to feelings of reluctance and hesitation to express different opinions, especially to those considered of higher status, potentially affects learning dynamics in higher education. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with in-depth interview methods, this research involved four students with Javanese cultural backgrounds. Data analysis was conducted based on George Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interactionism theory, which includes aspects of mind, self, and society. The results show that ewuh pakewuh manifests in the form of students' hesitation to actively participate in class discussions, concerns about negative responses, and different communication strategies when interacting with lecturers compared to peers. The research also reveals variations in the level of internalization of ewuh pakewuh values based on students' cultural backgrounds, as well as positive and negative implications of these values in educational practices. These findings provide an important contribution to the development of learning strategies that are adaptive to local cultural contexts while still encouraging active student participation.
