A Descriptive Analysis of Students’ Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation in Participating in Futsal Extracurricular Activities
Abstract
Student motivation plays a crucial role in determining participation and engagement in school-based extracurricular activities, particularly in sports. However, the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among students is not always clearly identified. This study aimed to analyze the levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among students participating in futsal extracurricular activities at SMP Negeri 7 Mataram. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed, involving 20 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire comprising 20 items based on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation indicators, measured on a four-point Likert scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques expressed as percentages. The results revealed that students’ overall motivation fell into the low category, with a mean score of 21.12%. This finding suggests that student participation in futsal extracurricular activities is not yet driven by strong motivational factors, particularly intrinsic motivation. Therefore, improvements in coaching strategies, the provision of more supportive training environments, and enhanced student engagement are necessary to foster higher levels of motivation.
