Effect of Sedentary Lifestyle on Body Mass Index and Cardiovascular Endurance in Adolescents

Abstract

Sedentary lifestyles are increasingly common among adolescents and can negatively impact health, including increased body mass index (BMI) and decreased cardiovascular endurance. This study aimed to analyze the influence of sedentary lifestyle on BMI and cardiovascular endurance in 34 adolescents aged 15–18 years with a quantitative approach and cross-sectional design. Data were collected using IPAQ, BMI calculations, and Harvard Step Test, and then analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that sedentary lifestyle had a significant effect on BMI (β=0.82, p<0.001, R²=0.48) and cardiovascular endurance (β=-2.15, p<0.001, R²=0.60). The higher the sedentary time, the greater the BMI and the lower the cardiovascular endurance. The conclusions of this study emphasize the importance of reducing sedentary time to maintain adolescent health, as well as recommend further research with a longitudinal design.
