Linguistic Beliefs of the Academic Community at STIBA Ar Raayah in Sukabumi in Light of Bernard Spolsky’s Theory/المعتقدات اللغوية لمنسوبي جامعة الراية لعلوم اللغة العربية بسوكابومي في ضوء نظرية برنارد سبولسكي

Abstract


This study analyzes the linguistic beliefs of the members of STIBA Ar Raayah in Sukabumi based on Bernard Spolsky’s theory of language policy, which comprises three interrelated components: language beliefs, language management, and language practices. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the research explores the perceptions of faculty members, students, and administrators regarding the role and status of the Arabic language within the university context. The findings indicate that STIBA Ar Raayah regards Arabic as an essential part of Islam, a marker of institutional identity, a medium of Islamic culture, a means of social regulation among students, and a tool for fostering Islamic unity. Moreover, the university believes that Arabic is an eternal and superior language, combining beauty, sanctity, and communicative function. These beliefs reflect an institutional ideology that places Arabic at the heart of educational management and academic activities, thereby fostering an active Arabic-speaking environment for religious and cultural purposes. This study contributes to understanding the dynamic relationship between linguistic ideology and practice in Islamic higher education institutions and enriches sociolinguistic scholarship through the application of Spolsky’s model in the Indonesian context.
