Arabic in the Linguistic Landscape of Indonesian Pesantren: A Symbol of Religious Moderation/اللغة العربية من منظور المشهد اللغوي في المعاهد الإسلامية بإندونيسيا: رمز للوسطية الدينية
Abstract
This study aims to analyse the use of Arabic in the linguistic landscape of Islamic boarding schools as a symbol of religious moderation in Indonesia, focusing on Ma'had Annuqayah and Ma'had Al-Mujtama' in Madura. This study explores social and cultural aspects using a mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative) with linguistic landscape theory and geosemiotics. It measures the frequency and patterns of Arabic signage use. The analysis was conducted by identifying the symbolic meaning of the use of Arabic and how it reflects the values of religious moderation, such as tolerance, non-violence, national commitment, and integration of local culture. The findings show that Arabic has a crucial symbolic role in conveying the values of religious moderation and reflects the harmonious relationship between Islamic tradition and the Indonesian socio-cultural context. The combination of Arabic and Indonesian in these signs also shows an effort to integrate religious education with modern society's social and cultural demands. This study provides new insights into the role of Arabic in Islamic boarding schools and its potential as an educational tool to raise awareness of global issues, such as environmental protection.
